£55,000 IN FINES IN 38 HOURS
A NEW speed camera motorbike has caused fury after catching 24 motorists an
hour, landing them with £55,000 of fines.
The 650cc Honda, fitted with laser sight and video camera, was parked up for
just two hours a day but trapped 919 speeding drivers over 38 hours.
Officers are using the £30,000 bike in Wiltshire on side roads too narrow
for a police van.
AA spokeswoman Alison Birkett said: "More and more people are becoming
suspicious of the fact that they are revenue earners."
Edmund King, of the RAC Foundation, said: "There seems to be a discrepancy.
We have the Department for Transport saying cameras need to be on accident
blackspots.
"Then we have a two-wheeler shooting round nooks and crannies."
Wilts police said the bike was used a lot at first because the rider needed
to get used to the equipment.
Unit boss David Frampton said: "We want to see people driving safely."
