Importing a car for a few months
Fra : Dave T

Dato : 27-09-02 14:56

Before I start, I will apologise for both writing in English, and the
fact that I'm sure this has been answered many times before.

I am an English citizen living in Denmark and have the use of an English
car. I want to bring it here for a few months, but don't want to spend
all the time and money registering it with the police/tax office. Is
there a way for me to get around this, or do I have to pay the full
registration fee for the car (around 180% of the price of it!!!).

And if I have to pay the full cost then can I get it all (or most of it)
back when I take the car back to England after the couple of months?

Thanks for any help you can give me as the police/tax people were very
unclear as to what could be done.

Dave

PS. Thanks to Peter for pointing me in the direction of this newsgroup.

If you are to pay the registration fee then the fee is calculated on what your car currently is
worth here in Denmark in its present state.

Its 105% of the first few thousands, and then180% of the rest
for new cars. Check the "Registreringsafgiftslov" its all in there.

This calculates to aprox 64% of the cars street value, used.
(if the car is worth 100k in Denmark, the tax will be 64k)

Dave T:
If you live permanently in Denmark you are not allowed to
drive a car on foreign plates, so you have to pay the tax i think.
But.. if you have it registrered in England, and are an English
citizen, you could take the chance and just drive the car on the
English plates.
If the odd thing should happen, and you are stopped by the
Police, then show your English driverslicense and passport,
and tell them you are on holiday here, then there is very very
little chance they will even think twice about it.
If you dont have the car registrered in England, send me a
private Email, i know where you can have it registered tax free.

You forget the VAT that is taken on top of both the car price + the tax (tax
on tax) it all ads up to 218 %

Thanks for all the info - it looks like my car will have to stay in the UK
for now - it'll cost too much to bring it here for an extended holiday!

I guess my holiday money will have to be spent driving somewhere else then

It's a shame there's no provision for having it here for a few months, but
what did I expect - they clearly want me to buy a car with Danish plates and
pay them the tax! Well that's not going to happen as I can't afford another
car and there is no way I'm letting my current one go...
