PARTON'S STAIRWAY
This from Doug Painter
"I just obtained a promotional copy of Dolly Parton's version of
Stairway To Heaven, from her upcoming "Halos and Horns" album. The
rendition is surprisingly faithful to the spirit of the original
version, and after one overcomes the shock of hearing Dolly singing
Robert's parts, sounds quite good. The fist part of the song builds with
layers of acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle and banjo slowly added,
ending up in a Windham Hill-sounding country jam. A gospel choir, which
handles Robert's shrieking vocals in the last part of the song, makes it
appearance in the last verse. Jimmy's solo is replaced by mandolin and
violin solos.
Several lines of the song are cut here and there, and Dolly tosses in ad
lib lines like "You can't bring it, you can't borrow, you gotta walk the
straight and narrow" and "The great almighty dollar leaves you lonely."
Quite an interesting and admirable effort from Ms. Parton, who has
endeared many rock fans in the past with her left-field covers of other
rock classics. U.S. release date is July 9, 2002."
