Vidste I det? (emailers)

Claris Emailer, which Jud Spenser created - as plain "Emailer" for Fog City
- was first bought by Claris/Apple, who took Jud with it. Then Apple closed
down Emailer - ended production - several years ago now (not long after
buying it). Shortly after that, Microsoft turned a poky little "Internet
Mail & News" app for Mac into Outlook Express Mac and hired Jud to do it. He
brought several other developers and program manager(s) with him from
Emailer to create it with him.

So although the _interface_ of OE Mac looks something like OE Windows,
underneath it's really Emailer 4. It's an all-Mac app made by Mac
developers, led by Jud. Entourage is a further development of OE Mac (maybe
"Emailer 6"). Although Entourage has many features of Outlook Windows, its
implementation "under the hood" is completely different, and is all-Mac.
That's why you can't import .pst files, etc. from Outlook - it's a
completely different app built from the ground up. (This is unlike Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint, which were Mac apps first, then adapted for Windows:
so underneath the Mac and Windows versions are quite close to each other
with similar implementation.) Entourage is a completely different app from
Outlook. It's still really a version 1.5, so of course it can't yet do
everything that Outlook can, But what it does, it does better than Outlook:
it's better organized, clearer, cleaner and more attractive. There's nothing
like Entourage's great Custom Views in Outlook, for example.

Jud was the chief developer for Entourage 2001, but chose to go back being a
full-time developer without administrative duties last year. He is still one
of the lead developers for Entourage, and has nothing to do with Emailer any
more (Emailer is dead). The Development Manager of Entourage is now Dan
Crevier, another Mac-only developer who in fact was originally the
AppleScript implementer for Emailer (part-time) whom Jud brought over to MS
to work on OE and Entourage.

Now you know.

Hejsa.

købe i dag ,-(

/Sebastian
