help with external microphone... :-(
Fra : hansler

Dato : 11-01-02 14:12

....somehow i won't get any sound input thru it
i (G3 500 pismo, 200 rev. b, OSX 10.1.2) tried everything, different
settings, whatever... is there some glitch in powerbooks regarding that?

i remember that earlier, i for example couldn't get the microphone that came
with a white-blue g3 to work either, tough some old microphone i found at my
office's storage room did work...

please help!

No, I don't think so, but there are two ways of using a mike on a PB. - Either
the built-in or an external mike. If you're going to use an external
microphone, you must use one of the newer 'PlainTalk' microphones. The older
non-electret (dynamic) PlainTalk mikes won't work on the new machines, because
the ampligying is rather too small in the new models.

If you have a mike from a B/W G3 this must be a New PlainTalk mike, and you
should be able to use it.

Do open the controlpanel 'Sound' and choose which type of microphone you want
to use - 'Built-in Microphone' (occours only on PB's) - or 'External
Microphone'. Depending on which one you want to use, mark the one once, and
close the controlpanel again. Prefs are automatically saved. Now plug in the
mike and try...

This has been the same problem... You must always set the prefs in the
controlpanel 'Sound' to fit the needed equipment, - microphone, CD drive or
external device.

But using this old microphone you seem to have had luck getting one of
the real
'oldies' that are able to come with an output that was amplified
precisely so
much that you were able to use it in the 'Line-In' input on the B/W G3.

The minijack used for line inputs are a std. 3.5mm jack plug, but the
one used
for PlainTalk microphones is somewhat longer apprx. 1,6-1,7mm, but the Ø is
still a 3,5mm minijack plug.

The plug on any Mac computer is mostly now devided into two parts, - a line
input and a microphone input, - both in the same plug. Some models
though -
only AV models - have a seperate microphen input.
