Extremely High Performances of Bach - Introduction to Bach
(Johann Sebastian Bach)

31 December 2005
{HRI 20051021-V3.2-A-V1.1}

(Addition Version 1.1
on 9 July 2008)

Extremely High Quality Performances of the music created by
Johann Sebastian Bach (music usually referred to simply as 'Bach'):

1. Oboe Concertos BWV 1053R, 1056R, 1059R, 1060R
performed by Goritzki, oboe, and Rilling, conductor.

2. Violin Solo - the 'Chaconne' and some other parts from the
Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo,
performed (definitely) by James Ehnes, violin.

3. Mass in B minor 'Hohe Messe'
performed by Karajan, conductor.

4. Saint Matthew Passion 'Matthaeus Passion'
conducted by Klemperer, and then the same, conducted by
Harnoncourt, and then by Koopmans, and then by Rilling.

5. All the Piano concertos, performed by Zoltan Kocsis.

6. All the Violin Concertos, by Yehudi Menuhin (in 1960).

7. The first movements, 'Preludes,' of the Cello Suites,
performed (definitely) by Robert Cohen, cello

'

The performers make a considerable difference, which is why
I mention them, here

- however, there are very many, very high quality
performances of Bach, and so I had to call these
Extremely High Quality Performances, and

- if by way of introduction to Bach, then maybe they are
listened to in the order suggested above.

'

As regards the solo violin and solo cello, the performers
indicated (Ehnes and Cohen) are mandatory for a first listening,
because these do perform the pieces correctly, which is not the
case with many other performers of the same works.

So it is with the other performers indicated.

After you listened to them, you can try other performances to
your liking.

Maria-Joao Pires is a perfect performer of Bach and
Mozart, due to her ability - like for instance Robert Cohen and
James Ehnes, and Zoltan Kocsis do too - to feel the composer.
She, Maria-Joao Pires, has however not recorded the whole oevre
of Bach or of Mozart, for her instrument (piano).

Performers who play Bach "as if they are senior to Bach,"
(e.g. Glenn Gould, piano) and those who perform Bach with
the emotions not of Bach but of other composers, (e.g.
Itzhak Perlman, violin) should be avoided as regards those
performances, no matter how assertive or proud these may
be or have been, about their versions of the work of Bach.

'

Now I am not at all going to discuss what is 'Extremely High Quality
Performance' of Johann Sebastian Bach.

It is rather so, that you either can hear it, and want to hear
it - or you can not hear it, or do not want to hear it.

Discussing it - with some fruits resulting - would
pre-suppose an ability and knowledge

to define Music

(not to mention the ability and knowledge
to define Beauty)

- an (amount of) ability and knowledge that is not
present currently, in our society.

So I will refrain from that discussion, and also not enter into
it.

I can refer those who desire to know why I do so refrain,

I do however like to mention, what a Bach listener recently used in
his signature to a New Year's wish:

"I listen to Bach to clear my head, first thing in the morning
starting the day, and last thing at night.
He's my handle on the possibility of continuing human-ness and
human creativity in an increasingly inhumane and destructive
world."

deeply understood, in
