When the female has finished spawning she retires to a quiet spot or seeks out the safety of a shoal of females, where she alone broods eggs and fry for between 16 days and more than 3 weeks.
The eggs and larvae are periodically "churned" and provided with fresh water, and these receive sufficient oxygen.
A brooding female may sometimes carefully take food after several days, but normally she completes the brooding period without feeding.
It is very rare for mbuna to continue to tend their brood after first release. As a rule the fry are immediately left to their own devices.
